Jacques Gallot (called Vieux Gallot de Paris : Jacques Gallot the Elder) (* unknown; † after 1690 in Paris ) was a French lutenist and composer .

Life

Gallot comes from a Parisian family of lutenists and composers. He learned from Ennemond Gaultier .

About 100 works by Gallot have survived, some in a printed collection, as well as in 15 manuscript sources, one of which was created after 1686. In the print of 1682 pieces are partly signed with the name vieux Gallot . The print also includes instructions on how to play the lute and a table with 12 decorative symbols and fingerings . The titles of his pieces often refer to female characters: La Fontange , La Montespan , but also courtly characters in Tombeaux : Turenne , Condé , Madame . Robert de Visée dedicated a tombeau to him posthumously .

His brother Antoine and a nephew, who was called Gallot le jeune , were also known as musicians, and a brother Alexandre Gallot (approx. 1625 to 1684) is also known.

In 1927, Ottorino Respighi transcribed a piece by Gallot in the La colomba movement of his suite Gli Uccelli .
