Ennemond Gaultier

Ennemond Gaultier (Gautier le Vieux, Gaultier de Lyon) (* around 1575 in Villette , Dauphiné , † December 17, 1651 in Nèves ) was a French lutenist and composer.

He initially worked in Lyon and in 1620 became valet of the Queen Mother Maria de'Medici and court lutenist in Paris. Possibly he was a student of René Mézangeau . In 1631 he retired to Nèves, where he spent the rest of his life.

His cousin Denis Gaultier published a print in 1669 that also contained lute compositions by Ennemond - however, it is difficult to assign the author to one of the two. This also applies to other collections in which works appeared under the name "Gaultier". In any case, the works had a great influence on the development of lute music in the following years.
