Jacques Christian Michel Widerkehr (born April 18, 1759 in Strasbourg , † April 1823 in Paris ) was a French cellist and classical composer .

Life

According to contemporaries, Jacques Widerkehr received his training from Franz Xaver Richter , the conductor at Strasbourg Cathedral. On the other hand, he referred to himself in the prefaces of his violin duos Op. 3 and 4 as a student of his cello teacher named Joseph Dumonchau. From 1783, Widerkehr worked in Paris, as a cellist at the Concert spirituel and as a freelance cello teacher and composer. Adolphe Adam is said to have received lessons in harmony from him.

His most famous works are several concertante symphonies for various wind instruments. In addition to two lost symphonies and some vocal works, some of them revolutionary hymns, he mainly created chamber music.
