Robert Stephen John Sparks

Robert Stephen John Sparks (born May 15, 1949 in Harpenden , Hertfordshire ), FRS , CBE , is a British volcanologist . He holds the Geology Professorship in the Faculty of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol , named after Sir Edward Chaning Wills , 2nd Baronet (1861–1921) .

Life

Stephen Sparks studied at Imperial College under George PL Walker , and graduated with a B.Sc. (1971) with a doctorate ( Ph.D. ) in 1974. From 1974 to 1976 he was a visiting researcher at Lancaster University before he worked as a postdoc at the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island for a further two years, funded by a NATO scholarship . From 1978 to 1989 he taught at the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge , where he was also a Fellow of Trinity Hall . In 1987 he went to the California Institute of Technology as a Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Scholar for one year . In 1989 he was appointed to the Chaning Wills Chair of Geology at the University of Bristol. In 2006/2007 he was Edward Bass Scholar at Yale University .

Act

Sparks has more than 300 publications to show, which were particularly influential in the field of volcanology and petrology of the magmatites , including important work on the stability of eruption clouds or the facies of ignimbrites . His research areas are also in the field of geo risks and their assessment as well as the application fluid mechanical principles to geological flow processes, such as in the convection of magma in magma chambers or the turbulent flow of rock melt during ascent in the volcanic vent .

Offices, honors and awards

Sparks was President of the Geological Society of London from 1994 to 1996 , President of IAVCEI from 1999 to 2003, and has been President of the Volcanology, Geochemistry and Petrology (VGP) Division of the American Geophysical Union since 2010 .

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise , the typically biennial five-year assessment of UK higher education institutions, Sparks was Chair of the Earth Sciences Department.

In 1988 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society , in 1998 a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, and since 2000 has been an honorary member of the Geological Society of America . He received the Arthur L. Day Medal of the Geological Society of America (2000), the Murchison Medal of the Geological Society of London in 1998, and her Wollaston Medal in 2011 . In 2012 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . In 2015 Sparks received the Vetlesen Prize , in 2018 the Royal Medal .
