Seasons fountain (Merseburg)
The Jahreszeitenbrunnen is a listed fountain in the city of Merseburg in Saxony-Anhalt .
location
The fountain is located in downtown Merseburg on a square at the confluence of Apothekerstrasse and Burgstrasse . To the north is the cathedral pharmacy to the Rautenkranz .
Architecture and history
The fountain was created in 1981 by the sculptor Martin Wetzel . The place on which the fountain was erected was only created during the remodeling of Merseburg in the 1960s and 1970s. A synagogue was located in this area until the 16th century .
The basin of the fountain is octagonal. On each of the eight sides there is a bronze relief with allegorical representations of the four seasons and related different ages of man. In the middle of the basin rises a high column on which stands the life-size statue of a largely unclothed woman holding a cloth. Because of the way it is represented, the fountain is also popularly known as the drapery fountain .
In the local register of monuments , the fountain is listed as a monument under registration number 094 20120 .
