Jairamdas Daulatram

Jairamdas Daulatram (* July 21, 1891 in Hyderabad , Sindh , British India , today: Pakistan ; † March 1, 1979 in Delhi ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), who was governor of various states and temporarily a minister.

Daulatram, son of Daulatram Alimchandani, completed a law degree after attending school and then started working as a lawyer . During this time he met Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1915 and was a member of the governing body of the Indian National Congress (INC) after the Amritsar massacre on April 13, 1919 . Between autumn 1920 and February 1922 he took part in Gandhi's campaign of non-cooperation against British rule in India and was elected a member of the Legislative Council in Bombay in 1926. Between 1928 and 1940 he was a member of the working committee of the INC and served as its general secretary in 1929. During protests before the Karachi Magistrate Court , he was injured by police gunshots and was temporarily detained. He was one of the participants in the Gandhi Salt March in March and April 1930 . After he was again general secretary of the INC in 1933, he served as its president in 1934 and was also chairman of the committee for the wages of textile workers in Bombay (Bombay Textile Wage Committee) and a member of the central board of the employers' association (Village Industries Association) . He was also an active member of the Quit India Movement Gandhi between 1942 and 1945 .

On December 9, 1946, Daulatram became a member of the Constituent Assembly of India . He became the first governor of Bihar after independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947 and held this post until his replacement by Madhav Shrihari Aney on January 11, 1948. He then became Minister for Food and Agriculture in the first Nehru cabinet and in 1948 belonged to this until 1950.

He then succeeded Sri Prakasa as Governor of Assam on May 27, 1950 and held this office until May 14, 1956, whereupon Saiyid Fazl Ali took over on May 15, 1956.

A postage stamp with his portrait was issued in his honor on July 21, 1985 by the Indian Post Office.
