Jake Godbold

Jake Morris Godbold (born March 14, 1933 in Jacksonville , Florida ; † January 23, 2020 there ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was Mayor of Jacksonville from January 2, 1979 to July 1, 1987.

Life

Jake Godbold grew up in Jacksonville. In 1967 he was first elected to the Jacksonville City Council, from 1971 to 1978 he was its President. After the resignation of Mayor Hans Tanzler , who ran for the governorship of the state of Florida, Godbold initially led his term of office to an end. He was later officially elected mayor. In 1983 he was confirmed in office. During his tenure, Godbold campaigned for the preservation of the NFL football team Jacksonville Jaguars and established the Jacksonville Jazz Festival . In the 1987 mayoral election, Jake Godbold was no longer allowed to run after two consecutive terms, and Tommy Hazouri was elected as his successor.

In 1995 Godbold ran again for mayor in Jacksonville, but was defeated in the election to the Republican candidate John Delaney . He then withdrew from politics, but continued to work as an advisor to Delaney and was involved in charitable causes. Until her death in 2013, Jake Godbold was married to Jean Godbold, with whom he has a son. Godbold died on January 23, 2020 at the age of 86.
