John Adrian Delaney (born June 29, 1956 in Lansing , Michigan ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was Mayor of Jacksonville , Florida from July 1, 1995 to July 1, 2003 . After his tenure ended, Delaney served as President of the University of North Florida until 2018 .

Life

John Delaney grew up in Cincinnati , Ohio, and moved to Jacksonville with his family when he was sixteen. He graduated from Terry Parker High School in 1974 and then studied law at the University of Florida , which he graduated with a bachelor's degree. In 1981 Delaney became the assistant to attorney Ed Austin . After his election as mayor of Jacksonville in 1991, Delaney became the mayor's chief of staff . After Austin announced that he would not run again in the 1995 election, Delaney applied for his successor. In the election he prevailed against the Democratic applicant Jake Godbold . John Delaney was popular with the Jacksonville community and was re-elected in 1999 with no opposition.

After two consecutive terms in office, John Delaney was no longer allowed to run for mayoral election in 2003. John Peyton was elected to succeed him. Shortly after his tenure ended, Delaney was named president of the University of North Florida. Between October 2008 and July 2009, he also temporarily performed this office for the State University System of Florida. He resigned in 2018 and has worked for a political and management consultancy ever since. John Delaney is married with four children and three grandchildren, and lives in Neptune Beach .
