Massa Chi ( Kazakh and Russian Масанчи ; Dungan Инпан Ingpan ) is a place in the Southeast region Zhambyl in Kazakhstan . It is mostly inhabited by Dungans .
geography
Massantschi is located in the Qordai district in the southeast of the Shambyl region, around eight kilometers from the border with Kyrgyzstan . It is located around 50 kilometers southeast of Qordai and 60 kilometers northeast of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek .
history
The place was founded in 1878 by Bai Yanhu, a military commander during the Dungan uprisings from Shaanxi , as Karakunus (Каракунуз). Between 1903 and 1918 the place was renamed in honor of Tsar Nicholas II in Nikolajewskoje (Николаевское). In 1965 the village was given its current name, Massantschi, named after Maghasy Massantschi , a Dungan communist in the Soviet Union .
On February 7, 2020, ethnic unrest broke out between local Dungans and Kazakhs from the surrounding villages in Massanchi and some neighboring towns . A mob of young men, some of them armed with iron bars, stones and firearms, marched through the village and set buildings and vehicles on fire; eleven people were killed.
population
In the 1999 census, Massanchi had a population of 8,926 people. At the last census in 2009, the place had 13,606 inhabitants. Around 90 percent of the inhabitants of the village belong to the ethnic group of the Dungans , five percent are Kazakhs and another five percent are Russians .
