The Jacob Bower is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city of Braunschweig and moved to its current egg market in the precincts of the old town . Today the monument is a place of culture, events and encounters.

history

The Jakob- Kemenate is located next to the former Jakobskirche . The building, which was built in the 13th century and where wall fragments from the 12th century have been found on the east wall, is one of the oldest secular buildings in Braunschweig. It once belonged to Jakobstraße 3, a larger medieval property.

Since 1765 the "Ducal Leihhausanstalt" (founded by Duke Karl I ) has been set up on the property at Jakobstrasse 3 . It is considered the oldest German land credit institute, which formed the origin of the Braunschweigische Staatsbank , from which today's Norddeutsche Landesbank (NORD / LB) emerged.

In Braunschweig, kemenaten were typical stone buildings as a refuge from fire and attack, as representative, storage and residential buildings. The Jakob-Kemenate survived the great air raid on Braunschweig on October 15, 1944 only as a ruin. Provided with an emergency roof, the remains of the front building caused by the war were largely removed in 1963. In 2006 it was restored and expanded by the architect Rainer Ottinger, OMArchitekten BDA, with funding from the City of Braunschweig, the Richard Borek Foundation , the State of Lower Saxony , the Nord / LB Public Foundation and the German Foundation for Monument Protection with funds from the Glücksspirale television lottery . The Hamburg sculptor Jörg Plickat has developed a thermally movable nailed steel facade made of COR-TEN steel with a strong handicraft style for the front building, which is unique in the world . Derived from the medieval protective technique of shrouding city and church gates with iron plates, reference is made to the original protective function of the bower. The result is a building ensemble that is both a monument, contemporary architecture and modern work of art and is used as a cultural and meeting place "jakob-kemenate".

The two sculptures "Dialog" made of COR-TEN steel in front of the Jakob-Kemenate by Jörg Plickat reflect the clash of old and new parts of the building. The composition is very reduced in accordance with the sculptural language of the sculptor. The cubic elements were deliberately placed in the chord with Romanesque-Gothic arch segments, as they occur as parts of the core architecture of the bower.

Others

In 2015, Rainer Ottinger added modern extensions to the Hagenbrücke bridge . It is also used for art exhibitions.
