Jakob Nikolaj David Thomas Danielsen (also Jacob Nikolai David Thomas Danielsen ; born August 14, 1888 in Sioraq , † April 13, 1938 in Qeqertarsuaq ) was a Greenlandic painter .

Life

Jakob Danielsen was born into a typical family of hunters and fishermen , so he grew up as a kayak and dog sled hunter in Sioraq, a previous residential area of ​​today's Kangerluk , and later in nearby Qeqertarsuaq . He sat on the local council for a while. He was a good storyteller and at some point began to illustrate stories on packaging paper from Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel (KGH) , which he later used as a load on his shotgun , so none has survived. However, he was discovered by the KGH employed Landsfoged North Greenland , Philip Rosendahl , who promoted him from then on and persuaded him to paint watercolors . Jakob Danielsen painted around 300 of these in his life. His works depict the hunting life of the Kalaallit in great detail and ethnologically valuable , and include a diverse selection of landscapes, times of day and seasons. In 1936 his wife fell ill with the flu that led to her death. Jakob Danielsen also got the disease and was weakened as a result, eventually falling ill with tuberculosis , from which he died in 1938 at the age of 49. Rosendahl took his works to Copenhagen and left them there to the Danish National Museum . He also summarized them in 1942 in a book that was published again in Greenlandic in 1957 . At the beginning of the century, Knud Rasmussen wrote down the legend of Kaassassuk told by Jâkuaraĸ Eugenius , with Jakob Danielsen painting all the pictures in the story.

Jakob Danielsen was the son of Niels Christoffer Magnus Danielsen (1851-1911) and his wife Karen Cecilie Benigne Nielsen (1852-1936). On September 15, 1915, he married Charlotte Juliane Jakobed Clasen (1896-1936), daughter of Pavia Peter Vittus Clasen and Cecilie Dorthea Antonette Maren Johannesen. The couple had the following children:
