Jakob Jonas Björnståhl
Jakob Jonas Björnståhl (born January 23, 1731 in Rotarbo, Södermanland Province , Sweden , † July 12, 1779 in Thessaloniki ) was professor of Oriental and Greek languages at Lund University and a respected explorer.
Live and act
He was the son of Magnus Gabriel Björnståhl, a sergeant in the army, and Anna Regina Hjortsberg, the daughter of a pastor from Husby-Rekarne (a small village in today's town of Eskilstuna) attended primary schools in Strängnäs , and later studied at Uppsala University . There he completed his philosophy degree in 1757. Later he was appointed professor of Swedish philology and from 1765 he was professor of oriental languages.
From 1767 to 1779 he traveled to various countries in Europe and Asia and from 1770 to 1773 he stayed in Italy. The letters he wrote during his travels were originally published in Swedish and then translated into German and Italian.
From September 1774 he stayed in The Hague , where he also met regularly with Denis Diderot, who stayed in this city of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces for a few months on his return from Russia to Paris .
He probably died of the plague in Thessaloniki in 1779 .
