Jakob Mändmets (born July 17 . Jul / 29. July  1871 greg. In Paiküla today Landsgemeinde Lääne-Saare Island Saaremaa ; † 25. December 1930 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian writer and journalist .

life and work

Jakob Mändmets studied from 1885 to 1888 at the Kaarma teachers' college . He then worked as a teacher in the districts of Saaremaa , Läänemaa and Harjumaa . Mändmets then embarked on a career in journalism . From 1903 until it was banned in 1905, he worked as an editor for the Estonian newspaper Uus Aeg , from 1906 to 1910 for Päevaleht , from 1910 to 1916 for Tallinna Teataja and from 1916 until his death again for Päevaleht .

In 1897 Mändmets made his debut as a writer. In 1922 he became a member of the Estonian Writers' Union . Mändmets mainly wrote stories, short stories and narratives that describe country life. He devoted a large part of his work to the poor everyday life on his home island Saaremaa. He has also published plays, reviews and essays.
