Life

Riedl was born in 1791 to a wealthy family of tanners. At the age of ten he received a rifle (rifle) from his cousin Josef Speckbacher , with which he developed great skill.

As early as 1809, at the Battle of Bergisel , Riedl was assigned a small "Company Schützen". Riedl was later appointed Adjutant von Speckbacher. After the death of Andreas Hofer, Riedl fled with other Tyrolean freedom fighters via Saxony to Berlin, where he settled down as a trader.

At the beginning of 1813, Riedl learned from Baron von Lützow in Berlin that he wanted to put together a corps of voluntary non-Prussians. Riedl made an application to set up a "Tyroler Schützencompanie", which was granted by the Prussian government. On March 18, 1813, a company of 259 Tyroleans joined the Lützow Freikorps, including their commander Jakob Riedl, Joseph Ennemoser and Riedl's brother Sebastian Riedl . During the 1st Peace of Paris, Jakob Riedl asked to be released from the Freikorps and retired with the rank of captain. Riedl was awarded the Iron Cross , the Order of St. Anne and a high Swedish order.

On December 14, 1813, Riedl married the Prussian captain's daughter Auguste von Bernard. The young couple went back to Tyrol, where they bought the Truferhof half an hour from Schwarz. Riedl's wife Auguste was homesick and the couple returned to Berlin. This time Riedl took a lot of Tyrolean cattle with him and first settled in Rixdorf (today Berlin-Neukölln ) and later in Friedersdorf near Storkow .

Riedl was well known in the royal family, he gave the king a good name and even addressed him in letters as a "little brother" and was considered a fanatical hater of French. On his deathbed, Riedl was appointed royal court forester. Riedl died on September 8, 1840.
