Jakob Sande

Jakob Sande (born December 1, 1906 in Dale i Sunnfjord , † March 16, 1967 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian writer, poet and singer. He is considered an important Nynorsk poet in Norway.

Life

Jakob Sande was born in Dale i Sunnfjord in 1906. He wrote his first poems and songs during his school days in Dale and Nordfjordeid . In September 1926 he began to study philology in Oslo and published his first collection of poems in 1929.

In the spring of 1933, after completing his studies, he was hired as a deck boy on a ship that took him to America. He reported on this trip for the newspaper "Dagbladet" and in the autumn of the same year published the poetry collection Frå Sunnfjord til Rio , in which the life of a seafarer plays a prominent role.

He then worked as a teacher in a grammar school in Fredrikstad and, after the Second World War, in the same position in Oslo. In 1942 he married Solveig Ytterlid, their daughter Siri Sande was born in 1943.

In 1963 he decided to devote himself entirely to his work as a poet. For this he received a state grant of 15,000 crowns, which he was promised for the two following years. However, his health deteriorated rapidly during these years, and in 1967 he died in Ullevål Hospital in Oslo.

Jakob Sandes poems have gone down in Norwegian literary history as humorous, often even grotesque works. Especially at the beginning of his career he was opposed by conservative Christians because of his lewd language and topics, but his works were popular with the population. The fact that the poems were often set to music as songs, such as his poem Det lyser i stille grender , which is very popular as a Christmas carol , also contributed to this. In total, more than 20 albums with poems set by Sandes by different interpreters were released.

In 2006, on the occasion of Sandes 100th birthday, the Faroese singer Hanus G. Johansen recorded an album with the group Aldubáran with versions of his poems recorded by him.
