View of the defense tower on Jakoberwall

The Jakoberwallstrasse is preserved to this day bastion of the former city walls on the southeast edge of the Augsburg city . It was built between 1540 and 1542 and consists of a high embankment with a neck ditch . The complex also includes a three-storey defense tower (so-called Jakoberwall tower ) with a semicircular floor plan and residential buildings on the side. The buildings are registered as architectural monuments in the Bavarian list of monuments.

history

Jakoberwall in the city map from 1846

Nuremberg engineers advised the city in 1519 to modernize the existing fortifications. However, this modernization was not started until 1538 for financial reasons. In the course of the construction work, the city had the Jakoberwall and defense tower built on the so-called "Bachenanger" from 1540 to 1542 as a replacement for the existing stone wall. The defense tower was rebuilt by Elias Holl at the beginning of the 17th century .

With the lifting of the fortress status of Augsburg in 1866, Jakoberwall also lost its importance. Unlike, for example, the city wall sections in the west of the city, the bastion was not leveled, but largely left in its original state. In 1908 the city finally converted the ramparts into a public green area. During the Second World War, the facility suffered several damage, but was not completely destroyed. In 1976 the city carried out renovation work to preserve the building.

present

The Historic Citizens' Guild of Augsburg has leased the Jakoberwall Tower and the attached buildings from the city since 1991 . She uses the facility as a clubhouse and takes care of the structural maintenance. The inner courtyard was converted into a small open-air theater ( Kleine Augsburger Freilichtbühne ) by the association's members . In addition to the club's own events (for example during the Dult ), theater performances by the Sensemble Theater have also taken place there in the summer months since 1998 .
