The Jakobskirche is the old parish church of Adelsheim in the Neckar-Odenwald district in the north of Baden-Württemberg . The Gothic building is used today as a cemetery church. The Jakobskirche was named " Monument of the Month June 2012" by the Monument Foundation Baden-Württemberg .

history

The Jakobskirche was built in 1489 by the Electoral Mainz bailiff Martin von Adelsheim . It replaced a previous Romanesque building and served as a burial place for the Lords of Adelsheim. After the introduction of the Reformation , it was a Lutheran parish church from 1556 . After the construction of a new church, it lost this function in 1776. From 1813 to 1821 it was used by the Reformed and from 1862 to 1881 by the Catholics . In 1884 the church was restored under the direction of Hermann Behaghel . Since then, the church, which is still owned by the evangelical community, has served the city of Adelsheim as a cemetery church.

description

The Jakobskirche was built north of the historic old town on the banks of the Seckach . The single-nave building closes in the east with a three-sided choir . An octagonal ridge turret with a pointed helmet sits above the west gable . The sacristy is built on the north side and the burial chapel of the Lords of Adelsheim on the south side. On the outer wall of the chapel there is a group of Mounts of Olives from 1495, which is attributed to Hans Eseler .

The large linden wood crucifix in the choir dates from the 15th century, as does the sacrament house . The wooden pulpit is from 1650. The painting in the burial chapel dates from 1606. The more than sixty tombs, which date between the 14th and 18th centuries, are particularly noteworthy. Most of the epitaphs are from the lords of Adelsheim, including the founders of the two main lines Poppo von Adelsheim († 1369) and Beringer von Adelsheim († 1357) as well as the founder of the church Martin von Adelsheim († 1497). Two tombs in the church were created by Hans Eseler, one by Peter Dell the Elder .

The Jakobskirche is the station of the Jakobsweg from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Speyer.
