Little is known about the career of the engraver Jakob van der Schley. The inside title of a book with the collection of engravings from the Seven Years' War of 1760 shows that he was a "highly respected student of the famous Picart le Romain ". The maps in the book, translated Topographical Maps of the Camps of the Campaign of 1757, in Westphalia , partly represent the oldest plans of various places, such as that of Bredenbeck .

Schley had been a pupil of Picart since he was 12 years old. After the death of his teacher, he finished the copper plates he had started. His area of expertise, which his younger brother Philipp van der Schley (1724-1817) helped him to work on, were mainly book titles and vignettes .
