James Beard (painter)

James Henry Beard (born May 20, 1812 in Buffalo , † April 4, 1893 in Flushing , New York) was an American animal painter .

Life

James Beard initially painted portraits in Cincinnati , including those of Presidents John Quincy Adams and Zachary Taylor . In 1846 he went to New York , where he became a member of the Art Academy in 1872 and initially dealt with genre painting . Later he devoted himself entirely to animal painting, achieved great success and was even called "the American Landseer ". Examples of his works are The poor relatives (dog picture), The threatening danger (1871), Mutual friendship (1875), Out of sight, but not out of mind , The consultation (1877) and Don Quichotte and Sancho Panza (1878). His well-known genre painting The Advocate and His Clients was exhibited at the Philadelphia Exhibition in 1876 .

He was elected a full member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in 1872 . James' brother William Beard was also a well known animal painter.
