Controversy

  • Joke about the Ebola virus: In February 2017, during a visit to South Africa, the YouTuber published a joke on Twitter about the Ebola virus in Africa, which was perceived as discriminatory. In that tweet he wrote, “I can't believe we're going to Africa today, omg, what if we get Ebola? […] James, we are fine, we could have got it from Chipotle last year ”. He later apologized.
  • Comment on Trans Men: In April 2019, Charles claimed not to be entirely gay. In the past there would have been women whom he found very beautiful. He would also have liked transsexual men. This statement sparked controversy as it was perceived as transphobic . Shortly after this statement, he apologized and claimed that this was by no means transphobic.
  • Dispute with Tati Westbrook: On May 10, 2019 Tati Westbrook uploaded a YouTube video entitled "Bye Sister ..." (German: "Bye, sister ..."), in which she accused Charles of being sexually and manipulate emotionally. The trigger for the video was an advertisement that James Charles posted during the Coachella Festival promoting products from a brand that competed with Tati Westbrook. This led Westbrook to refer to Charles, whom she said she always supported, as disloyal. After this video, James Charles lost over a million followers on YouTube within 24 hours, while Tati Westbrook gained around four million subscribers. In an eight-minute video entitled "Tati", the YouTuber apologized to his fans, as well as Tati and her husband, but received mostly negative feedback. A second video followed later with a length of 41 minutes and the title "No more lies" (German: "No more lies"). In this he tried to refute Westbrook's allegations with evidence and gained more support.
  • #JamesCharlesIsOverParty: While numerous people stopped supporting James Charles due to the dispute with Tati Westbrook, another controversy ensued on January 1, 2020, which made the hashtag “#JamesCharlesIsOverParty” a trend on Instagram and Twitter. The reason for this was a video on his Instagram channel in which James Charles sang Saweetie's song My Type , which used the discriminatory word "nigga". Although Charles thinks he left this part out, a wave of aversion to the artist followed.
  • Criticism of the use of filters: Although James Charles has admitted to using filters and Photoshop apps several times, he has been criticized for using them too excessively and thus portraying his talent better than it is. According to critics, his looks are too symmetrical and retouched, giving the impression that he has better skills than is actually the case.
