CoverGirl is an American cosmetics brand founded in 1961 in Maryland , United States by the Noxzema Chemical Company. It was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 1989 and later by Coty, Inc. in 2016 . The Noxell Company promoted this line of cosmetics by giving models, actresses, and singers who appear on the covers of women's magazines the opportunity to wear their products.

In 1963, the model and future actress Jennifer O'Neill signed as a cover girl model at the age of fifteen. It appeared in both print and television commercials that year. Their 30-year contract catapulted CoverGirl into the country's best-selling make-up line. Other models were Drew Barrymore , Christie Brinkley , Zooey Deschanel , Ellen DeGeneres , Dania Ramirez , Christobelle Grierson-Ryrie, Rihanna , Cybill Shepherd , Queen Latifah , Sofia Vergara , Taylor Swift , Zendaya , Janelle Monáe , Maye Musk , Katy Perry , Pink and Issa Rae .
