Sofía Margarita Vergara Vergara (born July 10, 1972 in Barranquilla ) is a Colombian - American actress and model .

Life

Vergara began her career as a model and first attracted attention in Latin America when she appeared in a commercial for Pepsi . She then worked for the Spanish-language television channel Univision as a presenter of popular programs such as Fuera de serie and A que no te atreves .

2002 Vergara had her breakthrough in Hollywood with a minor role in the film comedy Big Trouble by Barry Sonnenfeld with Tim Allen and Rene Russo . This was followed by appearances in the films Soul Plane , Dogtown Boys and Four Brothers , for which she and her co-actors were nominated for a Black Reel Award in the Best Ensemble category.

On television, Vergara appeared in supporting roles in the short-lived sitcoms Hot Properties and Knights of Prosperity . In 2007 she was part of the main cast of the first season of Amas de Casa Desesperadas , the Colombian- Ecuadorian version of Desperate Housewives , and she was also featured this year as a recurring character in the lawyer series Dirty Sexy Money .

Since 2009 she has played Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the Mockumentary Modern Family . For this role, she was nominated for an Emmy for best supporting female role in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 . In 2011 a Golden Globe nomination followed for the part . In May 2012 she got a role in Machete Kills , the sequel to Robert Rodriguez 'action thriller Machete .

According to Forbes magazine , Vergara is the highest paid series actress for the seventh year in a row, with an estimated income of $ 42.5 million (June 2017 to June 2018).

Private

In 1999 she was named Hispanic Woman of the Year for her social commitment . In 2002 she was the first Colombian to receive the Women of Hope award for her role model function for young Latin American women.

Vergara has a son (* 1992) from her marriage to her high school boyfriend Joe Gonzalez. The marriage lasted from 1991 to 1993. On July 10, 2012 she became engaged to the American businessman Nick Loeb . The termination of the engagement became known on May 23, 2014. In May 2015, the two attracted attention when it was revealed that they were fighting over the shared, frozen embryos.

In July 2014, it was announced that Vergara is dating actor Joe Manganiello . The two got engaged on Christmas 2014 after six months of relationship. The wedding took place on November 22, 2015 in Palm Beach , Florida .

In 2000 Vergara was diagnosed with thyroid cancer , which she was able to fight successfully.

Her younger sister is the actress Sandra Vergara .
