James Clarke Holt

Sir James Clarke Holt , often cited as JC Holt (born April 26, 1922 - April 9, 2014 ), was a British professor of medieval history . He was considered one of the leading historians in research on Robin Hood and the Magna Charta .

Career

Holt attended Bradford Grammar School and received his PhD from Oxford University in 1952 (The 'northern' barons under John ). From 1962 to 1965 he was Professor of Medieval History at the University of Nottingham , from 1965 to 1978 Professor of History at the University of Reading and 1978 until his retirement in 1988 Professor of Medieval History at the University of Cambridge , where he also received his Masters from 1981 to 1988 of Fitzwilliam College .

He was best known for his book on the Magna Charta, which he set in the political context of its time.

In 1978 he became a Fellow of the British Academy and was its Vice President from 1987 to 1989. 1981 to 1985 he was President of the Royal Historical Society .
