General Deshler

James Deshler (* 18th February 1833 in Tuscumbia , Alabama ; † 20th September 1863 at Chickamauga , Georgia ) was a brigadier general in the Confederate in the Civil War .

Life

Deshler was born in Alabama in 1833. On July 1, 1850, he entered the Military Academy at West Point , which he graduated in 1854 as the seventh best cadet of his year. The later Confederate General James Ewell Brown Jeb Stuart also belonged to his class . From July 1, 1854, Deshler served as a lieutenant in the 3rd Artillery Regiment, was transferred to the 10th Infantry Regiment on March 3, 1855 and promoted to lieutenant on September 17, 1858.

When the Civil War broke out, he resigned from the US Army and joined the Confederate Army as a captain . On December 13, 1861, he was wounded in both thighs in the battle at Camp Allegheny . After his recovery he was promoted to colonel and placed under the command of General Theophilus Hunter Holmes . This made him commander of the artillery during the Seven Day Battle of June 25th - July 1st, 1862 around Richmond , Virginia . Subsequently, Deshler was given command of a brigade of the Texas infantry in the division of General Henry Eustace McCulloch and promoted to brigadier general on July 28, 1863. At the same time he was assigned to the Tennessee Army and placed under General Patrick Ronayne Cleburne . A few weeks later, at the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia on September 19 and 20, 1863, Deshler was killed by an artillery shell of the Union troops while inspecting his troops .
