Chickamauga Creek is the traditional name of a smaller left tributary of the Tennessee River in the North American states of Georgia and Tennessee .
The Chickamauga became known historically through the battle of the same name during the American Civil War (September 19 and 20, 1863). The river takes its name from the Chickamauga Indians . According to another, controversial explanation, Chickamauga means "stream of death".
Today, the part of the river that flows north of Chattanooga in Tennessee into the Tennessee River is called South Chickamauga Creek (to distinguish it from the North Chickamauga Creek , which opens opposite to the right ); the battle took place on West Chickamauga Creek coming from the south (from Georgia ) and flowing east of Chattanooga into South Chickamauga Creek . Above the confluence of South and North Chickamauga Creek, the Tennessee was dammed into Chickamauga Lake .
