James Elliot (astrophysicist)

James Ludlow Elliot (born  June 17, 1943 in Columbus , Ohio - †  March 3, 2011 in Wellesley , Norfolk County , Massachusetts) was an American astrophysicist .

life and career

He studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his PhD in astronomy from Harvard University in 1972. He was professor of physics at MIT and, until his death, director of the George R. Wallace, Jr. Astrophysical Observatory .

He was also part of a scientific team that observed and evaluated the warming on Triton .

It is disputed whether James Elliot, Edward W. Dunham and Douglas J. Minkam discovered the rings of Uranus , or whether William Herschel discovered the rings as early as 1789 . Elliot, Dunham and Minkam are currently considered to be the explorers.

The asteroid (3193) Elliot was named after him.
