James Gamble (politician)
James Gamble (born January 28, 1809 in Jersey Shore , Lycoming County , Pennsylvania , † February 22, 1883 in Williamsport , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . From 1851 to 1855 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
James Gamble attended his home public schools as well as the Jersey Shore Academy . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in December 1833, he began to work in Jersey Shore in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1834 to 1836 he was district treasurer; in 1841 and 1842 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives .
In the congressional election of 1850 , Gamble was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Joseph Casey on March 4, 1851 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1855 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . Since 1853 Gamble represented the 15th district of his state as the successor to William Henry Kurtz .
He was a district judge in Clearfield County in 1859 and 1860 ; from 1868 to 1878 he served as the presiding judge on the Court of Appeal in Lycoming County. James Gamble died in Williamsport on February 22, 1883.
