James H. Pomeree

James Herbert Pomeree (born June 22, 1920 in Yonkers , New York , † December 7, 2008 in Chappaqua , New York) was an American computer engineer.

Pomeree received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Northwestern University in 1942 . He then worked with John von Neumann on his computer project ( IAS computer ) at the Institute for Advanced Study . From 1951 to 1956 he was chief engineer there. He then went to IBM , where he worked on the development of the Harvest Computer, an early supercomputer for the US government. In 1965 he led a development team that developed an early form of what later became known as cache memory and which the processor could access quickly. In 1993 he retired from IBM. He held 37 patents.

In 2006 he received the Eckert-Mauchly Award and in 1993 the IEEE Edison Medal . He was an IEEE Fellow and a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering . In 1976 he became an IBM Fellow . In 1986 he received the Computer Pioneer Award .

He had been married to Edythe Schwenn since 1945 and had three children.
