James Hall (Governor)
James Hall (born April 9, 1802 in Cornish , † August 31, 1889 in Elkridge , Maryland ) was an American doctor and first governor of Maryland in Liberia .
Life
James Hall was born the son of Nathaniel (1753-1809) and Prudence (née Chase) Hall. He studied medicine at Bowdoin College in Brunswick until 1822. He was employed as a doctor for the American Colonization Society in Liberia in 1831 , but had to return to Baltimore due to illness and spent five months in the hospital. In 1832 he was commissioned by the Maryland State Colonization Society to establish a new colony near Cape Palmas . In 1833 he sailed back to Africa and became governor of this newly founded colony of Maryland in Liberia . In June 1836 he had to return to Baltimore due to illness. His successor was his friend John Brown Russwurm . From 1840 until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he was an agent of the Maryland State Colonization Society and the American Colonization Society. The Maryland Colonization Journal was directed by im. He spent his retirement in the small village of Elkridge near Baltimore. He had at least one son, George Hall.
