James L. Kateka

James Luta Kateka (born April 29, 1945 in Karagwe district ) is a Tanzanian lawyer and a judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea since 2005 .

Life

James L. Kateka graduated in 1970 with a degree in Law at the University of Dar es Salaam from. This was followed by a master’s degree at King’s College London with a focus on international law . In 1970 he began his career in the foreign ministry of his country and was, among other things, an advisor to the Tanzanian Permanent Mission to the United Nations , ambassador to Germany , Russia and Sweden . From 2001 to 2005 he was a nominated ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague in the Armed Activities on the Territory of the Congo (DRC v. Uganda) case by Uganda .

James L. Kateka was also a member of various international conferences on the drafting of international treaties, including the Vienna Convention on the Succession of States to International Treaties , the Statute of the International Seabed Authority and that of the International Tribunal for the Sea.

Since October 1st, 2005 Kateka has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg . His term runs for his re-election by 30 September 2023. In the two arbitration proceedings between Mauritius and the United Kingdom , he was on 25 March 2011 and between Malta and Sao Tome and Principe , respectively on 27 December 2013 as the referee ordered.

Awards

James L. Kateka has been the bearer of the Great Cross with Star of the Order of Pius since 1993 .
