James Munkres
James Raymond Munkres (born February 18, 1930 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American mathematician who studies differential topology and combinatorial topology.
Munkres studied at Nebraska Wesleyan University with a bachelor's degree in 1951 and at the University of Michigan with a master's degree in 1952 and a doctorate with Edwin Moise in 1956 ( Some applications of triangulation theorems ). From 1955 to 1957 he was an instructor at the University of Michigan and from 1957 at Princeton University ( Fine Instructor ). In 1960 he became Assistant Professor and 1966 Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he retired in 2000.
He developed an obstruction theory of smoothing homeomorphisms. Munkres is known for an introductory textbook on topology and has written several other textbooks.
The Kuhn-Munkres algorithm is named after him and Harold W. Kuhn . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . From 1965 to 1967 he was a Sloan Research Fellow.
Munkres has been married since 1964 and has two children.
