James Peter Chalmers

James Peter Chalmers is a British lawyer and university professor. As of 2012, Chalmers has been the 14th Regius Professor of Law at the University of Glasgow .

Career

Chalmers studied law at the University of Aberdeen and Tulane University in New Orleans , Louisiana . He held visiting professorships at universities in Baltimore , Cape Town and Maryland and a visiting fellowship at Queen Mary College of the University of London . After teaching in Aberdeen (2000 to 2007) and at the University of Edinburgh (2007–2012), Chalmers took over the Regius Professorship in Glasgow in 2012 and held his opening lecture on January 17, 2013 (“ Resorting to crime ”).

In addition to his teaching activities, Chalmers is also involved in other areas. He is a member of the editorial board of Renton and Brown's Criminal Procedure magazine , is a member of the Criminal Courts Rules Council , the Criminal Law Committee of the Law Society of Scotland and other organizations. From 2010 to 2013 he was editor of the Edinburgh Law Review and trustee of HIV Scotland , a Scottish foundation that supports HIV patients.

Research interests

Chalmer's research focuses primarily on criminal law , evidence, and procedural rules. In this area, Chalmers is committed to countering the rapid increase in criminal offenses in recent years. In addition, Chalmers is also interested in Scottish law and the Scottish legal system in general, and is interested in the relationship between legislation and health care. Chalmers also intervenes in current cases in this area. To finance his research, Chalmers was able to secure the support of various bodies, for example the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the British Academy and the Scottish Government.

Honors

In 2012, Chalmer's research was supported with GBP 70,000 from the Philip Leverhulme Prize.
