James Patrick Bannerman Robertson, Baron Robertson PC QC (* 10. August 1845 , † 2. February 1909 ) was a Scottish - British politician of the Conservative Party and a lawyer , who some years deputy in the House of Commons , and most recently as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary was also a member of the House of Lords due to the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876 as Life Peer .

Life

Attorney and Lord Advocate

Robertson, a minister's son, graduated after school to study law at the University of Edinburgh , he one at the 1864 Master of Arts acquired (MA), and received his legal approval to the Scottish 1867 Bar Association ( Scots Bar ). He then took up a position as a lawyer ( Advocate ) and was appointed Crown Attorney ( Queen's Counsel ) for his legal services in 1885 .

On November 24, 1885 Robertson was elected as a candidate of the Conservative Tories to the House of Commons and represented in this until October 8, 1891 the constituency of Buteshire . During this time he was first between 1885 and 1886 and again from 1886 to 1888 Solicitor General of Scotland before he succeeded John Macdonald as Lord Advocate Attorney General of Scotland in October 1888 . He held this office until his replacement by Charles Pearson, Lord Pearson , in October 1891. At the same time he was appointed to Privy Councilor in 1888 .

Lord Justice General, Lord Justice and Member of the House of Lords

In 1891 Robertson succeeded John Inglis, Lord Glencorse , President of the Supreme Civil Court of Scotland ( Lord President of the Court of Session ) and as such at the same time Lord Justice General and thus President of the Supreme Court of Justiciary . He held these offices until 1899. He was replaced by John Balfour, 1st Baron Kinross . During this time he was also rector of the University of Edinburgh from 1893 to 1896 and thus successor to George Joachim Goschen . He was followed in 1896 by Alexander Bruce, 6th Lord Balfour of Burleigh , then Minister for Scotland .

Most recently, Robertson was appointed to the nobility by a letters patent dated November 14, 1899 based on the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876 as a life peer with the title Baron Robertson , of Forteviot in the County of Perth , a member of the House of Lords . Until his death in 1909 he worked as Lord Judge ( Lord of Appeal in Ordinary ). During this time he also served in 1901 as Chairman of the Commission on Irish University Education .
