James Virgili (born July 8, 1992 in Newcastle , NSW ) is an Australian football player on the position of a striker . He made his professional league debut at the age of 16. Virgili played 57 A-League games for Newcastle United Jets from 2009 to 2015 .
Career
Youth and amateur football
Virgili began his active football career in 1998 with South Wallsend , an amateur football club from Wallsend , New South Wales. There he played for several years and only later came to St. Francis Xavier College in Canberra . After college, he moved to the New South Wales Institute of Sport in 2007 , which opened in 1996 and is located in the Sydney Olympic Park . After a year at the institute, Virgili moved in 2008 to the youth team of the A-League club Newcastle Jets.
Club career
Virgili's professional career began on January 4, 2009, when he was substituted on on Matchday 18 of the current season in the 3-0 loss to Wellington Phoenix . When he was just 16 years and 180 days old, Virgili was the youngest player ever to play in an A-League match. He replaced his team-mate Ben Kantarovski , who was 16 years and 208 days old when he made his professional debut on August 15, 2008. In December 2011, this record was clearly undercut by 15-year-old Teeboy Kamara .
His contract, which expired in mid-2015, was not extended by the club. After using the second half of 2015 to advance his college degree in diagnostic radiography , Virgili joined Broadmeadow Magic in January 2016 with gaming operations in the NPL Northern NSW , where his father coaches the men's team.
International
Virgili took part in the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival football tournament with an Australian U-18 selection , scoring two goals in three games. In November 2009 he participated with the Australian U-20 selection in the successful qualification for the 2010 U-19 Asian Cup.
