Teeboy Kamara (born May 18, 1996 in Liberia ) is a Liberian-Australian football player . Kamara made his debut in the Australian professional league A-League at the age of 15 years and 212 days , becoming the youngest debutant in league history.

biography

Kamara was born during the turmoil of the civil war in Liberia , his biological father was abducted by militias before he was born and has been missing since then. Likewise, one of his older brothers was caught in a shootout by rival groups while playing football and was killed in the process. His mother then fled with him and his two older siblings - albeit without the stepfather, the goalkeeper of the Liberian national soccer team - to Sierra Leone and finally came to a refugee camp in Guinea . In 2003 he and his family were granted asylum in Australia . There Kamara grew up in Salisbury and was trained in football, first with the Croydon Kings and later briefly with Salisbury United . In 2010 Kamara was inducted into the South Australian Sports Institute under Tony Vidmar . At the end of 2010, Kamara attracted attention at a national tournament and subsequently moved into the focus of youth national coach Jan Versleijen and also received a place at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra in early 2011 .

In June 2011 Kamara took part with the Australian U-17 national team as their youngest player in the U-17 World Cup in Mexico. He had previously turned down an invitation from the Liberian Football Association and said that one day he would like to play with Australia against Liberia. His participation was questionable because, according to the regulations, each player is only allowed to take part in one U-17 World Cup and Kamara is no longer eligible to participate in 2013. Versleijen ultimately decided on a nomination, also against the background that he trusts Kamara to be part of the Australian U-20 squad in two years. In the course of the tournament, the offensive player made three appearances as a substitute and was instrumental in the 2-1 winning goal against Ivory Coast. In the 4-0 defeat in the round of 16 against Uzbekistan, he was sent off with a yellow-red card in stoppage time.

Shortly after the World Cup, his mother died and Kamara broke off his stay at AIS. He continued his footballing career in the 2011/12 season in the Adelaide United youth team under Michael Valkanis in the National Youth League . The coach of the professional team, Rini Coolen , surprisingly called Kamara for the A-League game on December 16, 2011 against Gold Coast United in the matchday squad. Coolen said of the reason for the nomination:

"Regardless of his age, I think he is physically capable, he shows that at training with the senior boys, mature-wise he's got a good football brain, he keeps it simple, he's very quick and he understands what has to be done. "

- Rini Coolen

With his 25-minute appearance in the 3-0 loss to Gold Coast, Kamara made his debut at the age of 15 years and 212 days, replacing James Virgili as the youngest debutant in the A-League . A few days after his debut game, he received a professional three-year contract from Coolen's successor John Kosmina , which will come into effect on his 16th birthday. In April and May 2012, three more short appearances as substitutes in the group phase and in the round of 16 of the AFC Champions League followed . At the beginning of September 2012 it was announced that Kamara would be absent for an indefinite period of time because of an unspecified illness that made it impossible for him to practice contact sports. A month later, his club had it checked whether he could be put on the long-term injured list due to the illness. After an eleven-month break, he returned to training in mid-2013.

According to his own statements, he dissolved his contract with Adelaide in 2014 without further commitment and went to Perth . There he joined Inglewood United , for which he played in the NPL Western Australia , the top division of the state. Kamara immediately established itself in Western Australian football. In 2014 he was part of the squad in a 2-1 victory in the state selection against Perth Glory, the first success since 2008; In 2015 he was also a member of the state selection in two games. In October 2014 he also received the Dylan Tombides Young Player of the Year Award for the best U-20 player in Western Australian football. The 2015 season Kamara played for Inglewood's league rival Stirling Lions .

In a November 2015 interview, Kamara stated that liver disease had put him out of action at Adelaide and named returning to the A-League as a big goal.
