James Wadsworth (politician, 1730)

James Wadsworth (born July 8, 1730 in Durham , Middlesex County , Colony of Connecticut , †  September 22, 1817 ibid) was an American politician who participated as a delegate from Connecticut at the Continental Congress.

After an extensive study of English , James Wadsworth graduated from Yale College in 1748 . He then trained as a lawyer and was accepted into the bar. From 1756 to 1786 he was a town clerk in the administration of his hometown Durham; in 1762 he also served there as justice of the peace. In 1773 he was appointed a judge in the New Haven County District Court, presiding over five years later. During the American Revolution , Wadsworth joined a local Committee of Safety . In the course of time, these bodies took over the actual local administration from the British colonial authorities. In the Continental Army he held the rank of Colonel during the War of Independence , in the militia he rose to major general .

In 1784 Wadsworth was sent as a delegate of his state to the sessions of the Continental Congress, which at that time was meeting in Annapolis and Trenton . Between 1785 and 1789 he was a member of the Connecticut Executive Council ; in the years 1786 to 1787 he acted as State Comptroller . He was also a member of the convention that ratified the United States Constitution for Connecticut in 1788 , but voted against its adoption himself. Subsequently, Wadsworth no longer held any public office. His great-great-nephew, also named James Wadsworth , was Mayor of Buffalo from 1851 to 1852 .
