Jan Blokker
Jan Andries Blokker (born May 27, 1927 in Amsterdam ; † July 6, 2010 there ) was a Dutch journalist, columnist and writer.
Life
Blokker studied Dutch studies and history, but did not graduate. His first novella Séjour appeared in 1951, and a year later he was trained as a reporter at the daily newspaper Het Parool . In 1954 Blokker became film editor at Algemeen Handelsblad , one of the two predecessor newspapers of the NRC Handelsblad . In December 1964 there was an advertising boycott by cinema operators due to its poor criticism of the film Spuit Elf . In 1963/64 Blokker worked with, among others, Rinus Ferdinandusse and Joop van Tijn on the satirical television program “Zo is het toevallig nog 's een keer” on the VARA broadcaster , then he worked in the final editing department of the TV broadcaster VPRO and contributed comments.
In December 1967 Blokker terminated the collaboration with Algemeen Handelsblad , since its publisher, “Nederlandse Dagblad Unie” (NDU) and the tabloid De Telegraaf founded a joint venture called “Unitel” for technical and commercial cooperation, and in April 1968 moved to Volkskrant as a columnist . The satirical columns he wrote for this newspaper have been summarized in a whole series of books since 1971, beginning with Niets aan de hand . In 1979 Blokker became deputy editor-in-chief of Volkskrant and played a decisive role in the professionalization and the departure from concern journalism that had spread there in that decade. Blokker held this position until 1985 and then remained a columnist. In July 2006 he ended his collaboration with the newspaper after a conflict with the editorial team of the literary supplement “Cicero”. At this point in time, Blokker had worked for de Volkskrant as a freelancer or editor for 38 years and had written 3,816 columns. He has since written for nrc.next , an offshoot of the NRC Handelsblad .
Blokker also worked as a screenwriter. For example, together with director Bert Haanstra, he wrote the script for the comedy Fanfare (1958), which was later nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival , plus others for television series. In the 1967 film Een vreemde vogel , Blokker can also be seen as an actor in the role of editor-in-chief. In addition to his columns and his satirical work, he was also active as a children's book author. Op zoek naar een oom was the first book in this field, and later works occasionally appeared under pseudonyms.
From 1983-1993 Blokker was chairman of the Productiefonds voor de Nederlandse Film (Dutch Film Funding), in 1992 he was appointed associate professor for press history at the Erasmus University Rotterdam .
