Jan Ciągliński , ( Russian Ян Францевич Ционглинский , transcription January Franzevich Zionglinski, * Feb. 8 jul. / 20th February  1858 greg. In Warsaw , Imperial Russia , † December 24, 1912 jul. / 6. January  1913 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Polish painter in the Russian Empire. He is considered a forerunner of Russian impressionism.

Life

Ciągliński studied painting from 1879 to 1885 at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. Ciągliński also became a lecturer at the Drawing School of the Society for the Promotion of the Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1894 he continued his training in Paris. He sought inspiration while traveling through Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. From 1902 he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1906 he received the title of academician, and in 1911 he became a member of the academy and a full professor. He also has his own private painting school and was a co-founder of the Mir Iskusstwa art group .

Ciągliński painted landscapes, oriental-looking paintings with strong symbolic expression, figural compositions and portraits. He is considered the first impressionist painter Russia.
