Jan De Winne

Jan De Winne (born July 24, 1962 in Bruges ) is a Belgian flutist on period instruments.

Life and career

Jan de Winne learned the modern flute at the Conservatories of Bruges and Ghent. While taking instrumental lessons, he studied art history and musicology at the University of Ghent. After these studies he deepened the playing of the historical transverse flute at the Brussels Conservatory with Barthold Kuijken . In 1987 he won the “Musica Antiqua Competition” at the Festival van Vlaanderen in Bruges.

Between 1988 and 2005 he was a solo flutist in numerous historical performance ensembles, such as "Il Fondamento" under Paul Dombrecht , the "Wiener Akademie" under Martin Haselböck , the "Salzburg Barockorchester" under Erwin Ortner and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under Ton Koopman . He then worked almost exclusively in the orchestras “ La Chapelle Royale ” and the “Orchester des Champs-Élysées”, directed by Philippe Herreweghe , and the baroque orchestra “Les Agrémens” under Guy Van Waas .

In 1988 he founded the ensemble "Il Gardellino" together with the oboist Marcel Ponseele . Jan De Winne is also involved in the construction of historical transverse flutes, based on models from the 18th and 19th centuries

After teaching at the Lyon Conservatory for several years, Jan De Winne has been professor of transverse flute at the Paris Conservatory and director of a chamber music class at the Brussels Conservatory since 2004 . He is also the artistic director of the record label “Passacaille”.

Concert activity

The concerts with “Il Gardellino” took him to most European countries, to Japan, North and Latin America and to Israel. As a soloist, he recorded the flute trios by Joseph Haydn (Eufoda), the flute quartets by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (Eufoda) and the flute sonatas by Georg Friedrich Handel (EPR). Further recordings were made with “Il Gardellino” (Accent).
