Guy Van Waas

Guy Van Waas (born April 15, 1948 in Molenbeek (Brussels)) is a Belgian conductor , clarinetist and organist .

Live and act

Van Waas, son of a painter and amateur violinist, studied at the music academies in Brussels and Mons (harpsichord with Robert Kohnen ), and orchestral conducting with Walter Weller at the Salzburg Mozarteum . He had his first employment as solo clarinetist at the Brussels Opera La Monnaie and from 1977 to 1991 with the symphony orchestra of the RTBF, the French-speaking Belgian radio, which was disbanded at that time.

Since his early interest in historical performance practice , he primarily played the historical clarinet and its variants chalumeau and basset horn . He works regularly as a clarinetist with the orchestra of the 18th century by Frans Brüggen , the Berlin Academy of Early Music , the “Orchester des Champs-Elysées” and other well-known ensembles. In 1992 he founded the “Das Reicha'sche Quintett” with fellow wind players.

International attention as a conductor told Van Waas, as under his leadership, the Concerto Köln a symphony of died young Spanish composer Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga was recorded. Since then he has been a guest conductor of several Spanish orchestras.

Since 2001, Guy Van Waas has been chief conductor of the Baroque Orchestra of the French Community of Belgium, Les Agrémens . With this ensemble he made 12 CD recordings up to 2015, including some of the forgotten works by Walloon composers such as André Grétry , Dieudonné-Pascal Pieltain , Antoine-Frédéric Gresnick and François-Joseph Gossec . A recording dedicated to the Liège opera composer Grétry, which was recorded with the soprano Sophie Karthäuser , received the Diapason d'or award in France .

In addition to his commitment to "Les Agrémens", he is a guest conductor of numerous well-known European chamber orchestras. One of his passions is playing the organ, and since 2004 he has been titular organist of the Carmelite Church in Brussels. Guy Van Waas taught chamber music at the Royal Conservatory in Mons until his retirement.
