Jan Ellenberg (born November 23, 1967 in Hamburg ) is a German molecular biologist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg . There he heads the working group Nuclear envelope structure and function in living cells . In March 2004 he was the first to receive the Walther Flemming Medal for his research.

Ellenberg studied biology at the University of Hamburg with a diploma in 1994. He worked from 1995 to 1998 on his doctorate at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda , USA, with Jennifer Lippincott-Schwartz , where he continued his doctorate in biochemistry , which took place in 1998 at the Free University of Berlin , remained until 1999. In 1999 he went to Heidelberg to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and became group leader in the Gene Expression and Cell Biology / Biophysics programs . In 2006 he became a senior scientist at EMBL and became its member. Since 2004 he has also been coordinator of the EMBL Center for Molecular and Cellular Imaging and in 2006 coordinator of the Gene Expression Unit, which in 2010 became the Cell Biology & Biophysics Unit , of which he is head.

Ellenberg researches the cycle of cell division ( mitosis , meiosis ), the proteins and DNA / chromatin complexes involved, genes and molecular processes and the organization of the cell nucleus, for example the nuclear pore complex and chromatin organization and formation. Among other things, he examined the separation of the chromosomes on the individual cells in mitosis and meiosis. He also deals with methods of microscopy on living cells including their automation and computer-aided image analysis.

In 2016 he became an honorary doctor of the Åbo Akademi in Turku and received an ERC Advanced Grant. In 2017 he became a member of the Academia Europaea and was named Allen Distinguished Investigator of the Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group , which carried out his research and that of Ralf Jungmann for epigenetic markers in connection with high-resolution microscopy for the representation of the three-dimensional structure of the human epigenome with 1.5 million Dollar sponsored. In 2018 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
