After initially learning the recorder, he received clarinet lessons from Alexander Thiem and Manfred Michel at the Friedrichshain Music School from 1975 . From 1978 to 1984 he attended the EOS "Georg-Friedrich-Händel" in Berlin-Friedrichshain , a special school for music. There he received special training in chamber music, orchestra, choir and music theory.

After graduating from high school and doing military service in a music corps , he studied clarinet and music education with Manfred Rümpler from 1987 to 1992 at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin . During his studies he began to deal with styles of music outside of classical music. Since 1988 he has been a clarinetist with the German band Aufwind , which plays Yiddish songs and klezmer .

In 1992 he met Simon-Jakob Drees. They played together in the band Ahava Raba , which deals freely and improvisationally with klezmer, but also other styles of music. He continued his musical experiments with Volker Schindel, an accordionist, pianist and educator. He worked on one of his chamber music projects. Schindel and Hermerschmidt later founded the duo Musette Brachiale . There, the mix between tradition and improvisation is the most important requirement.
