Karsten Troyke (* 14. August 1960 in East Berlin as Karsten Bertolt Sellhorn ) is a German chanson singer , actor and speaker who is primarily concerned with Yiddish made a name songs.

Life

Troyke learned the gardening trade and later worked with mentally handicapped children. From 1982 he is on stage. He dedicated his first public appearances to so-called "Gypsy music". On the side he took singing lessons from Leonore Gendries as well as lessons in acting and speech training . From 1990 he devoted himself entirely to song programs and theater (including Vaganten Bühne Berlin, Hackesches Hoftheater , Teatr Kreatur).

He participated in radio plays, worked as a voice actor and was seen in various stage plays. As an ambassador of the “Yiddish Song”, he has toured a number of countries such as Poland, France, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Australia, Israel, USA, Croatia and Sweden since 1989.

His album Yiddish Anders (1992) received the German Record Critics' Prize . His CD Forgotten Songs , published in 1997, contains previously unpublished songs from the memory of Sara Bialas-Tenenberg, who also became his mentor for the Yiddish language.

In his chanson programs, Troyke mainly worked with Bettina Wegner , Suzanna and the Trio Scho . His interpretations of songs by Georg Kreisler were mentioned in his first biography, published in 2005.

In 2006 two documentaries appeared with Troyke in Belgium (Les Films de la Mémoire), Yiddish Soul and Yiddish Soul - The Concert . In 2007 he was a permanent guest soloist on Bettina Wegner's farewell tour. In 2008 and 2009, in addition to his concerts, he again played theater in the ensemble of Miriam Sachs.

Troyke gives workshops on the interpretation of Yiddish songs, mediates rare songs from his collection, taught a.o. a. in the Jewish Music Institute of SOAS London, in Carleton College in Northfield (Minnesota) and most recently in the summer school of the Center Medem , Paris.

In his concerts since 2006 he has mainly devoted himself to forgotten Yiddish tangos , he is accompanied by Trio Scho and Jan Hermerschmidt . Since 2015 he has been performing mostly in a duo with Yiddish jazz, with Sharon Brauner being his partner .

He is a son of Werner Sellhorn , grandson Isot Kilian and uncle of Tino Mewes . For his 60th birthday a biographical portrait was published on haGalil
