Jan Kapistrán Vyskočil

Jan Kapistrán Vyskočil OFM (birth name Augustin Vyskočil ; born August 27, 1886 in Postoupky near Kremsier , † February 9, 1956 in Prague ) was a Czech theologian and historian and provincial of the Czech-Moravian order of the Franciscans .

Life

Augustin Vyskočil attended the kk grammar school in Kremsier from the school year 1897/98 , which he left in 1903 to join the Franciscan order in Hungarian Hradisch . With the beginning of the novitiate on September 21, 1903, which he spent in Mährisch Trübau , he took the religious name "Jan Kapistrán". After taking his religious vows , he first studied theology at the Slovenian religious schools in Kamnik and Laibach . In 1908 he passed the Matura in Schlan . From the winter semester of 1909/1910 he studied theology at Charles University in Prague , where he received his doctorate theol in November 1911. PhD. After further studies in philosophy and history, he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1917.

From 1917 to 1923 he worked as Provincial of the Czech-Moravian Franciscan Province. He then studied pedagogy and from 1928 worked at the Ordensgymnasium in Malacky, Slovakia, and in Pressburg . After his habilitation at the University of Olomouc , he was appointed professor at the Theological Faculty of Charles University in 1939. However, this activity was ended by the special action in Prague , with which the Czech-speaking universities were closed by the German occupation of the Protectorate on November 1, 1939. After the end of the war in 1945 Jan Kapistrán Vyskočil was able to resume teaching. He was also appointed provincial of the Czech-Moravian Order Province, which had its seat at the Maria-Schnee convent in Prague. In 1947 he published a comprehensive biography of the first Archbishop of Prague, Ernst von Pardubitz . However, after the February coup in 1948, the communist government of Czechoslovakia ended his activity with Aktion K. At that time all monks were interned in central camps . January Kapistrán Vyskočil was on 13 April 1950 to the autumn of 1955 at Abbey Želiv ( Seelau interned). He died in Prague on January 9, 1956. His body was buried in the grave of the order at Olšany cemetery.
