Jan Kjærulff (born December 30, 1943 in Gentofte , Denmark , † August 25, 2006 ) was a Danish sailboat designer and sailor. Numerous boat classics come from his pen, the groundbreaking design of which had a lasting impact on the development of sailing boats in the 1970s and 1980s.

The trained marine engineer first worked in the design office Knud E. Hansen in Copenhagen. He left Denmark in 1969 to work at the legendary New York boat design firm Sparkman & Stephens . In 1969, Kjærulff designed his first sailing boat, the Kommandant 31. When he returned to Denmark in 1971, he founded the Elvstrøm & Kjærulff Yacht Design atelier with the Danish Olympic sailing champion Paul Elvström . Together they developed a successful ½ ton regatta boat, the hull of which was used as the basis for numerous successful boats - including the Elvstrøm 32, Elvstrøm Cruiser, Luffe 32 and Blue Dane 32 (later Blue Leth 32).

Other classic boats followed such as the Granada 23, 27, 31 or 910, the Bianca 26, 28 or the long, narrow Aphrodite 101 . To this day, Elvstrøm & Kjærulff's designs are at home in many European ports.

In 1984 the Elvstrøm-Kjærulff duo separated and both founded their own design offices.

As a sailor, Kjærulff was active in the Kongelig Dansk Yacht Club . For Denmark he competed in Soling at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Kiel . Jan Kjærulff achieved 13th place in this competition together with Paul Elvstrøm as helmsman and Valdemar Bandolowski as crew member.
