In the following years he worked as a project engineer for Schlaich Bergermann Partner until he took over the institute management for supporting structure and structural design (itke) at the University of Stuttgart in 2000. In 2001 he co-founded “Knippers Helbig Advanced Engineering” with branches in Stuttgart, Berlin and New York and co-managed it for many years. His key projects from this time are the Expo 2010 Axis in Shanghai , the Thematic Pavilion of the Expo 2012 in Yeosu , South Korea , and most recently the gallery of the State Opera in Berlin, completed in 2017. From 2014 to 2019 Jan Knippers was spokesman for the DFG Collaborative Research Center TRR 141 “Biological Design and Integrative Structures” at the Universities of Stuttgart, Tübingen and Freiburg. Since 2019 he has been Vice Rector for Research at the University of Stuttgart and Deputy Spokesman for the DFG Cluster of Excellence 'Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture'.
