Jan Mossin (1936–1987) was a Norwegian economist . He was born in Oslo and received the degree Siviløkonom (roughly equivalent to a degree in business administration ) at the Norwegian Business School in 1959 . After spending a few years in the private sector, he began writing his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States in the spring of 1962 .

One of his publications from 1966, which is related to his doctoral thesis, makes a significant contribution to the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). Two years later, he and other people received the Alexander Henderson Award from his university for this publication. Three years after Mossin's death, another co-founder of the CAPM, William F. Sharpe , received the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics (Nobel Prize in Economics ). Mossin, like John Lintner , received nothing, as the award is not awarded posthumously.

After completing his doctorate , he returned to the Norwegian Business School and became a professor in 1968. He was also visiting professor at other universities: University of California, Berkeley (1969–1970), New York University (1973–1974), Columbia University (1976), the University of Texas at Austin (1978–1979) and at the University of Washington (1983-1984). Mossin was elected a member of the Econometric Society in 1973.
