Jan Ostroróg (* 1436 ; † 1501 ) was voivode of Posen , political writer and advisor to the Polish kings Casimir the Jagiellonian and Johann Albrechts .

Jan Ostroróg descended from the old Polish noble family of Ostroróg . He studied at the universities of Erfurt and Bologna the law . He was a proponent of strong central power of the monarchy , called for reforms within the Roman Catholic Church and the law (equality of all classes before the law). In his work " Monumentum pro Reipublicae ordinatione congestum ", written around 1475, he advocated fundamental reforms of the state, as well as the separation of state and church and the introduction of general conscription .

His marriage to the Ratiborian princess Helene, the daughter of Wenceslaus II (1405-1456), Duke of Ratibor , a descendant of the Bohemian King Ottokar II. Přemysl in direct male line and Margaret (Małgorzata) of Szamotuł († 1464), descended the sons Wacław and Stanisław Ostroróg.
