The Rachel Chapel, in the background the Rachelsee

The Rachel Chapel is a chapel on the Großer Rachel in the Bavarian Forest . Because of its proximity to the Rachelsee, which is just 300 meters south as the crow flies , it is also called Rachelseekapelle .

The chapel, located 1212 meters above sea level on a rock ledge 142 meters above the Rachelsee , goes back to an original building in 1885, built by Spiegelau forest master Ludwig Leythäuser (1851-1931). This chapel, made entirely of wood , burned down after the Second World War .

In 1951 a new building was built in the same place, again made entirely of wood. Inside, the new chapel was decorated with carvings by the Spiegelau master carver Johann Lentner (* September 5, 1894, † September 11, 1977).

The Rachel Chapel burned down in 1972 in autumn 1971

After this second Rachel Chapel also fell victim to a fire by arson on March 19, 1972, it was rebuilt in the same form and again furnished with carvings created by Johann Lentner.

At the end of the 1990s, the condition of the chapel had deteriorated significantly due to the weather and signs of aging, so that a fundamental renovation was necessary, which included a new construction of the wooden building almost completely true to the original. The work was completed with the inauguration on June 24, 2000.
