The Blood Wedding is a German - Belgian film from 2005 based on a comic by Jean Van Hamme and Hermann Huppen . The black comedy was directed by Dominique Deruddere , who also wrote the script.

action

The egomaniac and choleric Hermann Walzer has booked the feast for the wedding of his younger son Mark in the castle restaurant of the hotelier Franz Berger, who is on the verge of bankruptcy. Walzer has long wanted to buy the castle in need of renovation from Berger. However, this has so far refused. On this day, too, Walzer appears in Berger's kitchen, hands him an offer in an envelope and asks for a final decision by the evening of the same day.

Even the first course of the menu leads to a scandal, as the shrimp are supposedly spoiled. Walzer gets excited and causes the entire wedding party of around 14 people to leave the restaurant. The landlord Berger now locks the bride and her mother-in-law in the toilets because the two were still there to clean the dress, which had been stained with wine in the excitement - meanwhile Berger locks the wedding party, the absence of the bride and notice the groom's mother only after leaving the premises, by closing the gate of the castle. He refuses to release them until the bill has been paid.

A life and death struggle begins. To make matters worse, Walzer and his older son Andy are hunters and had their hunting rifles with them in their car, and Berger also owns an old shotgun. The idyllic country inn becomes a besieged fortress, in which the violence between the two opponents escalates. Walzer doesn't care that bystanders are affected, and the initially level-headed Berger is increasingly losing his nerve. All attempts to stop the stubborn fighting cocks fail.

One of the central themes is that Walzer is deeply disappointed in his son Mark because he is not as daring as he, his father, wishes - the son, on the other hand, is bitter because his father has never shown himself proud of him be. In this situation too, Mark is always looking for balance, de-escalation or giving in, while his father always seeks confrontation and tries to pursue his goal to the bitter end. He is encouraged in this attitude by his older son, who acts similarly aggressively and constantly agrees with him.

In the end, almost all the protagonists meet in the castle courtyard. The only way to break the escalation is that the groom prevents his father from further acts by overpowering him and punching him in the face with several fists. Now father Walzer is visibly proud of his younger son for the first time, sinks to the ground and lets go of further acts of violence - especially since his wife and bride have now been freed by employees of the hotel.

The situation between Walzer and Berger is not resolved any further. Before the now numerous injured people are driven to the hospital, they both stand face to face again and look at each other for a long time in a mixture of anger and helplessness - how the dispute over the bill and the one over the purchase of the castle will end remains open.
